Becoming confident in making decisions

Sometimes, making decisions can feel impossible

We can get stuck in a cycle of wanting to make decisions, but feeling frozen by possibilities. Every decision feels like the wrong one. It is a frustrating, tiring experience. Too many options can cause us not to choose at all.

In therapy, we can improve decision-making and develop the skills to handle doubts.

It can feel scary to begin that process. I know that feeling. Together, we just start by exploring. With curiosity, we can identify your emotions and thoughts when faced with a choice.

Do you have to think through every possible situation? Every worst case scenario?

Do you feel a surge of panic at choosing the perfect option?

Do you feel overwhelmed about identifying the right choice? Or avoid choosing at all?

By breaking it down, we can begin to understand your patterns better. Developing a deeper awareness of the experience of decision-making leads us to better understand where we get stuck. I often see people feel frustrated here. This is understandable. But, compassion and patience will be our guides in growth.

Collaborating, we can practice mindfulness in therapy. We build an awareness of the sensations. Feeling tense, an elevated heart-rate, feeling dizzy, feeling urgency. These are all common reactions. And we will develop an awareness of the thoughts. Overthinking, rumination, and catastrophic thinking tend to spike anxiety. The exact thoughts and feelings will be specific to you. This awareness will allow us not to get overwhelmed. Slowly, we become more tolerant. We feel more clarity.

With clarifying comes confidence. Decisions that feel meaningful will become more clear. And together, we will begin taking risks. We move forward. We make decisions.

It is a sure and steady process. I have seen many patients come in feeling lost and directionless, and leave feeling confident in their decision-making ability.

Starting the process can be hard. It’s a difficult decision in itself
Taking your first step forward begins the change.
