What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy is a one-on-one space where you and your therapist work together to understand your experiences, build coping skills, and move toward a life that feels more grounded and aligned with your values.

At EK Mental Health Counseling, we use evidence-based approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and exposure and response prevention (ERP) so you’re not just “venting”—you’re learning concrete, research-backed tools for change.

Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes and are held via secure video, so you can meet from your home, office, or another private space.

Therapeutic approaches we may use

Your therapist will tailor the approach to your needs—we’ll never force you into a “one-size-fits-all” model.

What to expect from individual therapy with us

Starting therapy can feel vulnerable. We’ll move at a pace that feels manageable while still helping you make meaningful progress.

In individual therapy, you’re not expected to show up with everything figured out. We’ll explore your experiences together and collaborate on next steps.

1. Getting to know you

In early sessions, we’ll learn about your history, symptoms, and what’s brought you to therapy now. We’ll clarify what you’d like to change or feel differently about.

2. Setting clear goals

Together, we’ll define realistic, specific goals—such as reducing compulsions, managing worry, improving sleep, or feeling less overwhelmed in daily life.

3. Learning practical tools

Your therapist will teach skills tailored to your needs—like exposures for OCD, cognitive strategies for anxiety, or grounding and self-compassion exercises.

4. Checking in & adjusting

We’ll regularly review what’s helping, what isn’t, and adjust your plan as your life and needs evolve.

Concerns we commonly address in individual therapy

Many people come to us feeling “stuck” in patterns of worry, avoidance, or self-criticism. Individual therapy can help you understand these patterns and create new ways forward.

“Do I need things to be ‘bad enough’ to start individual therapy?”

You don’t have to hit rock bottom to deserve support. Many people start therapy when they notice that worry, intrusive thoughts, or emotional ups and downs are getting in the way of how they want to live—even if they’re still managing day-to-day responsibilities.

If you’re unsure whether individual therapy is right for you, we can talk through what you’re experiencing and help you decide on next steps without pressure.

Common questions

How often will we meet?
Many people start with weekly sessions, then space out as they gain skills and stability.

At this time, our work is primarily online, serving clients across New York & Florida.
Can I work on more than one concern at a time?
